Migrating to Drupal 9

December 13, 2021

Drupal 7 reaches ‘end of life’ November 1st, 2023. Any sites running Drupal 7 should be migrated to Drupal 9 or to an alternative CMS by then.

Migrating is hard, and many factors have to be taken into account. Here are some questions to consider as you start planning your Drupal migration:

  • What functionality must be migrated over, and which can be left behind?
  • Which content must be migrated and is there any you can opt to not migrate over?
  • Is the existing site design still what you want? A Drupal migration is an ideal time to include a redesign effort, because the theme has to be rebuilt either way, and building a Drupal 9 theme that matches the existing Drupal 7 theme can be almost as much effort as creating a new theme.
  • Is your team comfortable managing your site? What are your pain points?

These questions provide a jumping off point for a deeper discussion about your site planning. Depending on your particular situation, it may or may not make sense to upgrade to Drupal 9. In some cases it can make sense to switch to another CMS (e.g. WordPress).

We have migrated many Drupal sites over the years, from Drupal 6 to 7, Drupal 7 to 8, and Drupal 8 to 9. Most recently we migrated a few dozen sites from Drupal 8 to 9.
